The University of Oregon reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement and supplier diversity by participating in the 2025 Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME) Annual Trade Show. Held at the Portland Expo Center, the event brought together more than 1,700 attendees and over 130 exhibitors, including public agencies, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations from across the state.

For the University of Oregon, the trade show is more than just a networking opportunity—it’s a vital part of its broader outreach strategy to connect with emerging vendors and service providers, particularly those from underrepresented communities. By sponsoring and attending the event, the university continues to build meaningful relationships that support inclusive economic development.

“Our presence at the OAME Trade Show is one of the many ways we invest in the community,” says Shari Wheeler, who often spearheads the event for the University of Oregon. “It allows us to meet innovative small businesses, learn about their services, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.”

The university’s involvement in the trade show is part of a partnership with OAME that spans more than a decade. While one of many participating agencies, the University of Oregon values the event as a unique platform to engage directly with Oregon’s diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Founded with a mission to eliminate discrimination and racism, OAME is an all-inclusive organization that lives by the motto: “EVERYBODY’S IN, NOBODY’S OUT!” Its 850-member network includes entrepreneurs, public agencies, partner nonprofits, and large businesses working together to create equitable opportunities for all.

From its Delta Park campus in Portland, OAME offers a wide range of services to support business growth, including:

  • Free technical assistance and business counseling
  • Access to capital, including SBA microloans
  • Incubator office space at below-market rates
  • Bi-monthly networking meetings to foster collaboration

The Annual Trade Show is a flagship event that brings these efforts to life, offering a dynamic space for small businesses to connect with potential clients and partners. For the University of Oregon, it’s a chance to listen, learn, and grow alongside the communities it serves.
